3.Import Green Coffee into Hawaii???
Dear Robert,
I posted a note in alt.coffee today regarding importation of
green beans into Hawaii. I wonder if you would publish something
along the same lines in your eJournal? It is so important to
people in Hawaii, but that would be the only state, however...if
any green bean sellers subscribe to your eJournal, then perhaps
they would resist the urge to send any green coffee to Hawaii
unless it was fumigated.
Let me know if I could help you, help us, in any way.
Thank you in advance.
With aloha,
Cea Smith
Posted to alt.coffee:
I just got a note from a fellow Hawaii state resident, unknown to
alties, who occasionally buys our green Kona Coffee. He wrote
for our advice saying.."my stash of green beans has become infested with
those little hard-shelled dark brown beetles (about the size of a
sesame seed). ... Fortunately, they seem to go for the Harar and
Sidamo that I'll probably toss out. Fortunately they haven't attacked
my prized wet-processed beans, especially that stellar batch of
peaberry that you sent me earlier this year. What shall I do?"
An ALARM went off! To all green bean sellers on the mainland and
elsewhere, You May Not Send Any Green Coffee beans into the State of
Hawaii without it being fumigated with Methyl Bromide. It is a State
Law! The reason behind this important law, is that we do not have the
devastating Broca Borer, etc. here. Other coffee growing places where
the Broca Borer is entrenched, have a terribly difficult time
contending with the bug, necessitating chemical use etc.
If our State law was ignored, Kona Coffee would suffer unbelievable
damage. It would be devastating. Please realize that if you are
sending unfumigated green coffee into Hawaii, you are breaking a State
law and I would have no trouble telling someone about someone who was
doing that.

-Words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman

Mind and Heart
--------------
The mind and the heart make a good pair. The heart is an extremist:
Untamed, a single emotion will fill its entire space. The mind finds
balance and harmony, even between opposites.
The mind is cold and aloof. To the mind, reality is a curiosity.
But the heart lives in a real world where things matter.
When the heart listens to the vision of the mind, it too learns
to carry a counterpoint of voices, even the voices of other hearts.
When the mind listens to the depths of the heart, then its vision
can go out into the world.

RABBI PLISKIN'S DAILY LIFT
Daily Lift #62 Happiness Without Approval
If you seek approval, ask yourself why you want it in the first
place. The answer is that you view approval as pleasurable and
giving you happiness.
Realize how much needless suffering your approval-seeking causes
you. This will motivate you to master an attitude that allows you
to feel happy even when people fail to show you honor and approval.
It is ironic that something one wants for happiness causes so much
unhappiness. By giving up the demand for approval, you will ensure
yourself greater happiness in life.

6. No Link Between Coffee Consumption and Colorectal Cancer
New evidence shows no association between coffee consumption and
risk of colorectal cancer, despite previous studies, which
suggested coffee consumption had a protective effect. This
presumption may be premature, the authors stated.

7. Coffee and Teens
More young people are getting a caffeine fix with a cup of joe
By Ivette M. Yee
Times-Union staff writer
Seventeen-year-old Jennifer Adamo will skip breakfast, but she
won't skip coffee. "This is my breakfast," said Jennifer, of
Arlington, who has been drinking coffee since she was 4.
That's right, Jennifer loves joe and has a cup every morning, every day.
But a lone java junkie she's not. These days, more teens are stepping
out for a daily fix of the caffeinated stuff. Whether they're looking
for a pick-me-up or just an excuse to meet up with friends, many teens
are getting a kick out of coffee.

8. The Fair Trade Coffee Company
Announcing the launch of a new Company!
I've just launched a new company! It is coffee related, but focuses
on the sale of Fair Trade Certified Coffees. The name of this
company is: The Fair Trade Coffee Company
Check out the website for a clearer understanding of Fair Trade Certified
Coffees.
http://www.fairtradecoffee.org
I will be selling this coffee through mail-order off the website
and through a special fundraising program I'm providing to church
groups, called "the Fair Trade Coffee Crusade."
It's the Fair Trade Coffee Crusade that I'm really excited about!
It is a brilliant, user-friendly, fundraising program that brings
together the sale and advocacy of Fair Trade Certified Coffees,
church groups' never-ending need to raise money and my never-ending
need to roast and sell more coffee. It's one of those WIN WIN deals!
"The Fair Trade Coffee Crusade: Raising awareness while raising money!"
I've been testing this program with the youth group at my church
(the Summit Unitarian Universalist Church) for the past year.
Although we haven't been selling 'Fair Trade Certified' Coffee,
I've learned a lot about how to streamline such an operation;
make it user-friendly (OK... "Idiot Proof!"). It was finally time
to grow the program and to pitch the idea to the entire denomination.
So, I officially launched the company at the annual all-church
convention (known as General Assembly). I spent last week in Quebec
City, passing out magnets, buttons and brochures in the convention's
exhibit hall, talking to anyone who'll stop and listen. I took
names and e-mail's of those who might want to start the Crusade
at their congregations -- be they members of the youth group or
any other group within the church.
I think I got my point across. I have a list of 90 congregations
interested (to some degree) in trying the program. We'll see
how many actually follow through, but judging by the enthusiasm,
I bet half of them will do it. It's sooooo easy, they have
nothing to lose!
Please check out the website. You'll learn all about the benefits
of purchasing Fair Trade Certified Coffee and if you click on
the link to the Fair Trade Coffee Crusade you might just find
the perfect fundraiser for YOUR Church group!

10. Governor Approves Coffee Labeling Law
By BOBBY COMMAND/ West Hawaii Today
Those who sell coffee grown in Hawaii will have to use labels
which inform customers how much of what they are selling is
Hawaii coffee under a law approved Friday by Gov. Ben Cayetano.
The new law takes effect July 5, 2003 and allows consumers to
clearly distinguish a 100 - percent Hawaiian coffee from a
blend that uses both Hawaiian coffee and foreign coffee, said
Frank Kiger, Hawaii Coffee Association president.

June 26 - It took a couple of minutes for the Saudi newspaper
editor to notice that his 21-year-old daughter was standing
outside the Starbucks window. Veiled, as most women are on the
street in Jeddah, she was gesturing furiously for him to come talk.

12. A grande decade for Starbucks; can the
next 10 years be as profitable?
By Jake Batsell
Seattle Times business reporter
When Howard Schultz and Orin Smith hit the road to pitch Starbucks'
initial public offering in 1992, many of the Wall Street investors
they courted were incredulous.
"They'd say, 'You mean, you're going to sell coffee for a dollar
in a paper cup, with Italian names that no one in America can say?
At a time in America when no one's drinking coffee? And I can get
coffee at the local coffee shop or doughnut shop for 50 cents?
Are you kidding me?' " Schultz, company chairman, recalled recently.

13. Starbucks Urges Greater Help for Farmers
BY TIM LARGE
TOKYO - (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp., the world's largest coffee-shop
chain, said on Wednesday slumping coffee bean prices posed a threat
to the global industry and called on manufacturers to do more to
help impoverished farmers.
"The coffee growers of the world are facing price levels at
historic low points," Howard Schultz, chairman of the
Seattle-based bean baron, told Reuters in an interview.

14. Hunger haunts Panama's Guaymis
CERRO SOMBRERO, Panama : A group of sluggish children, their
stomachs swollen from malnutrition, stand around a pot of a
lumpy rice drink, while their mother, too weak to stand herself,
ladles out a spoon of the hot white sludge to each child.
The Tubris family, members of Panama's indigenous Guaymi people,
has been unable to sell its coffee crop this year because of the
collapse in world coffee prices, and is now too poor to buy
enough food or crop seeds to feed itself.
